Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, Experimenting with Light, Aliens, Māori Myths and Legends, Taonga and Much More!

This week Room 16 celebrated Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week).  We learnt the days of the week along with other words and phrases.  Students were given a waiata about the days of the week and challenged to teach someone in their whānau the song over the weekend.

We introduced a new iPad app that helps us to learn the names of different objects in Te Reo.  It was to explore and see what new words we could learn.

This week we also had a light and dark theme.  Room 16 learnt about the different sources of light and experimented with how light works.  Room 16 learnt about light refraction, translucency and different light sources.  It was fun making a cave in the classroom and experimenting with different light.

We had an alien called Orb visit Tawa School this week and Orb wrote a letter to Room 16.  Room 16 wrote back letters describing Tawa School.  They also wrote stories about an exciting adventure travelling to Orb's home planet called Veepo.

Room 16 had a very busy week learning about tennis, Kapa Haka, PMP and drama.

Everyone enjoyed listening to lots of different Māori myths and legends including Awarua the Taniwha of Porirua, Maui and the Sun and Ngake and Whātaitai the Taniwha of Wellington Harbour.

Today Room 16 designed and made taonga.  They learnt that different shapes and designs have special meanings.  They will be painting their taonga next week to gift to a special person in their lives.
